Coffee Prices Post Moderate Gains on Signs of Smaller Global Coffee Supplies

September arabica coffee (KCU24) on Tuesday closed up +2.45 (+1.09%), and Sep ICE robusta coffee (RMU24) closed up +25 (+0.61%).

Coffee prices on Tuesday posted moderate gains.  Smaller coffee exports from Costa Rica, the world's fifth largest producer of arabica coffee, are bullish for arabica prices after the Costa Rican Coffee Institute reported Tuesday that Costa Rican coffee exports from Oct-Jun are down -7.6% y/y at 702,097 bags.  Robusta coffee on Tuesday had carryover support from Monday when Vietnam's General Statistics Office reported that Vietnam's Jan-June coffee exports were down -10.6% y/y at 902 MT.

Coffee prices also have support from concerns that drier-than-normal conditions could adversely affect Brazil's coffee crops.  Somar Meteorologia reported Monday that Brazil's Minas Gerais region received no rain last week for the fourth consecutive week.  Minas Gerais accounts for about 30% of Brazil's arabica crop.
